Hematite - Badenweiler, Freiburg, Germany

This exceptionally sparkling hematite specimen comes from the traditional discovery region of Badenweiler in the Black Forest near Freiburg, Baden-Württemberg. The area is known for its diverse ore deposits and was already mined in Roman times for its rich hematite deposits.

Crystal structure and luster

The piece impresses with its intense metallic brilliance and fine crystalline surface, which creates an impressive sparkle in the light. The highly reflective crystal surfaces are typical of well-formed hematite from this region and reflect the light in silvery to deep grey tones.

Color and texture

The hematite has a characteristic steel-grey to shiny black appearance. Under certain light conditions, it shimmers slightly reddish - an indication of its chemical relationship to red ironstone. The dense, compact crystal formation ensures a particularly lively surface appearance.

A highlight of any collection

Such sparkling hematite pieces from Badenweiler are rare to find today, as the known sites are hardly accessible. This specimen is a representative example of the quality and aesthetics of southwest German iron oxides and is a valuable addition to any mineral collection - both historically and visually.
