Barite & Calcite - “Spaceship” from the Linwood Mine, Buffalo, Iowa, USA
This extraordinary barite specimen from the famous Linwood Mine in Iowa is nicknamed “Spaceship” for a reason: The central crystal with its perfectly symmetrical, slightly floating shape looks like a futuristic object - fascinating, elegant and of almost technical precision. In combination with delicate calcite on a finely structured matrix, the result is a collector's item with a special character.
Crystal structure - geometry meets aesthetics
The dominant barite crystal is the center of attention: rhombic in shape, clearly defined and slightly translucent, it inevitably draws the eye. Its shape is reminiscent of a stylized spaceship - an association that lends this find its special charm. The composition is supported by several clear to milky white calcite crystals, which are formed along the matrix and lend the piece additional dynamism and sophistication.
Color & texture - Subtle elegance
The color of the barite is a subtle beige with a hint of golden brown - soft but effective. The light plays on the surfaces of the crystal and creates soft reflections, while the matrix itself is kept in gray to ash blue tones - a beautiful contrast that creates depth. The calcite crystals appear pure and clear, with a delicate sheen that subtly but effectively emphasizes their presence.
Presentation - Milled base for maximum value
Like all of our high-quality exhibits, this piece rests on a custom-made acrylic base. The CNC-milled base emphasizes the geometry of the step and enables an all-round successful presentation. The base not only makes the “spaceship” literally float, but also emphasizes its museum-like appearance.
A unique showpiece from the Linwood Mine
Minerals from the Linwood Mine have been prized by collectors for decades - barite crystals of this quality and shape in particular are real rarities. In combination with the fine calcite and the elegant presentation, this specimen will become a highlight of any collection.
A fascinating example of the creative power of nature - strictly geometric, almost futuristic and at the same time with an earthy naturalness. A mineral that not only inspires collectors, but also design lovers.
