Calcite & Chalcopyrite from Schlema, Erzgebirge - Germany
This extraordinary specimen comes from the traditional mining district of Schlema in the Ore Mountains, which is known for its variety of sulphide ores and aesthetically crystallized minerals. The interplay of calcite and chalcopyrite gives this specimen a special visual and mineralogical tension.
Crystal structure and contrast
In the center of the piece are two clearly formed, rhombohedral calcite crystals with fine transparency and shimmering luster. They stand out clearly from the surrounding matrix rock, which is richly coated with shiny metallic chalcopyrite crystals. These show a strong, golden to iridescent shimmering surface - typical of chalcopyrite from Schlema.
Play of colors and texture
The harmonious combination of the cool white of the calcite and the warm, metallic sheen of the chalcopyrite creates an exciting play of colors. At certain angles of light, the chalcopyrite shows slight tarnishing colors with a bluish-green shimmer, which lend the specimen additional vibrancy.
A classic from the Ore Mountains
Finds like this exemplify the aesthetic diversity of minerals from Schlema - one of the most historically significant mining locations in Europe. This step is not only a visually appealing collector's item, but also a testimony to geological processes and centuries of mining tradition.
